LANDFILL DIVERSION OPTIONS

CO2 and Methane is produced by decomposing food in landfills, contributing to global warming
The shocking fact is, in North America, we waste 40 percent of our food! A recent study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that total emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane are almost twice as high in North America as previously thought. More potent than carbon dioxide, methane is a deadly contributor to global warming.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), all that uneaten food accounts for 23 percent of methane emissions as it rots in landfills

Talking Trash On Emissions
While attending the recent AGU conference, some of us were struck by a statistic presented by Professor Richard Alley: On average, a person's contribution of carbon dioxide waste to the atmosphere is forty times greater than their production of solid trash to landfills when measured as mass.
